Whole Education

Whole Education. This is a new Whole Education Alliance, recently set up by the RSA, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and others to ensure that our schools stop wasting the enthusiasm that children and young people have for learning.

A gulf has opened up between what education systems provide and what children and young people need. Our schools and colleges rightly try to ensure that young people are literate, numerate and gain academic qualifications. But the emphasis on testing and passing exams often squeezes out other skills that are just as vital in today’s world.

The leading non-political and non-profit-making organisations that have come together to form Whole Education are determined to change this. They want all young people to receive a well-rounded education that they can relate to. They want all young people to learn practical skills such as communication and teamwork, to develop qualities such as resilience and empathy and to acquire knowledge that goes beyond literacy and numeracy to an understanding of our culture. A Whole Education will combine practical skills with theory, vocational and academic study for all young people whatever their ability.

The changes have already begun. Whole Education is not just about schools and colleges but about spreading a different approach to learning throughout the community and throughout people’s lives. The partners are working with more than 5000 schools and colleges, including three-quarters of secondary schools, and with many youth groups and charities.

Everyone should have the chance of a Whole Education.

So far the active partners behind Whole Education include Oxfam, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, RSA, Innovation Unit, Young Foundation, Human Scale Education, UK Youth, Futurelab, ASDAN, Cooperative, College, Food for Life Partnership, Campaign for Learning, Studio Schools and ViTaL Partnerships.
