TIDE Courses and resources summer / autumn 2010

1.  Secondary Conference. Making it work ~ creative KS3 curriculum development   Thursday 24th June 2010, The Studio, Birmingham
This conference for teachers, school leaders and local authority advisors, will share practical ideas about creative cross-curricular approaches in secondary schools, taking inspiration from big issues faced by communities locally and globally. Ideas from the Cities Project so far, and activity for next year will also be explored.  Details of key speakers and workshops are available from the website. 
Early booking rate of £120 for all bookings made before 17th May 2010

2. DFID Global School Partnerships. This day course is designed to support schools with their planning for global school partnerships.  It is offered in partnership with Bridges – making global connections and DFID Global School Partnerships.
Tuesday 29th June 2010
~ Introduction to Global School Partnerships, Tide~ Centre                              For teachers interested in developing a global learning partnership. The course will explore the principles, educational benefits, practicalities and viability of global school partnerships. We will be exploring the pros and cons and the preparation needed before finding a partner school.
The course is free to attend but booking is essential.                                              £50 cancellation fee applies for non-attendance on the day.
3.  Day course for KS1 teachers

Global learning at KS1. Wednesday 16th June 2010, Tide~ Centre This course for KS1 teachers will support the development of confident, successful and responsible global learners.  It gives space for participants to think globally and reflect on learning needs and curriculum.   Course fee £100

4. Event for young people at KS3. Birmingham KS3 Active Citizenship Event
Wednesday 24th November 2010                                                                        

Initial teacher meeting:
Thursday 20th May 2010 4:30 – 6pm, Tide~ Centre
Young people and their future are at the heart of the Cities Project, so we will hold a major event for Birmingham KS3 students during Autumn Term 2010, offering them the chance to voice their opinions about the future of their city. This is an opportunity for schools to help young people engage with active citizenship in partnership with a range of Birmingham organisations. There would be no cost for involvement in this event.

5.  Advance Notice: Philosophy for Global Citizenship
Sapere validated Level 1 training course,
facilitated by Helen Griffin, Development Education Centre South Yorkshire
Tuesday 19th October 2010 and Tuesday 30th November 2010, Tide~ Centre

This two day non-residential practical course will:

 Explore the aims, principles and benefits of philosophical enquiry;

 Give participants sufficient practical understanding of philosophical enquiry to enable them to start practising it in their own school;

 Explore how philosophical enquiries can develop Global Citizenship skills, concepts and dispositions and tackle controversial issues.

6.  New Resources

It makes you think ~ ideas for science with a global dimension at KS3. This resource produced in partnership with Association for Science Education is now
available as a download.  Hard copies are also available for purchase.

Learning to choose ~ This online resource is aimed at KS3 students and focuses on climate change.  The resource is free.  We very much welcome feedback from teachers on how their students have made use of the resource and how they have responded to it.
