Press release: Awards seek students’ vision for better places

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has joined forces with the Landscape Institute to run Future Vision 2010 – the annual student award scheme to find bright ideas for better places – for the next two years.

Future Vision 2010 will be run by the Landscape Institute, in association with the HCA, to encourage young people to think about how they can contribute positively to the creation and maintenance of great places.

Neil Williamson, president of the Landscape Institute said:

“Future Vision 2010 offers a great opportunity for students across many disciplines to prove their creativity in tackling sustainable ideas on buildings, places and the environment.  Best of all, the five winners will have a guaranteed work placement for four weeks.”

Gill Taylor, skills and knowledge director at the HCA said:

“We’re delighted that the Landscape Institute is running Future Vision 2010. And we look forward to continuing to celebrate innovative yet workable ideas from students that have the potential to improve communities up and down the country.

“Nurturing emerging talent in this way and harnessing the spirit and enthusiasm of our young people is part of our drive to maximise opportunities for local people. We’ve made training and employment opportunities a condition for receiving HCA funding, we’re working closely with JobCentre Plus to ensure that 25% of the people we recruit for entry level posts will be through the Local Employment Partnership, we are continuing to run our successful graduate training programme for the fourth year and we’ve signed up to the Backing Young Britain campaign as well as supporting the Future Vision award scheme.”

Targeted at UK postgraduates and undergraduates, Future Vision 10 is designed to unearth and celebrate new ideas that could improve communities, generate interest in housing and regeneration careers and boost the prospects of young people keen to enter the sector.

The awards promote bold vision and inspirational ideas that are not only sustainable but could be implemented in cities, towns and villages across the country and have the potential to make a significant impact on communities.

Winners of this national award scheme each receive £1,000 and an all expenses paid work placement with a leading organisation in the sector.

Award categories for Future Vision 2010 include:

·                     Future Buildings

·                     Future Work Life

·                     Future Open Spaces

·                     Future Green Thinking

·                     Future Play Time

The winners will be announced at the Landscape Institute’s annual awards ceremony at the Brewery in London on 18 November 2010.
