Campaign for Learning: Can We Learn Our Way to Happiness?

National Learning Forum

Can We Learn Our Way to Happiness? London 02 October 2008

The Campaign for Learning is hosting a National Learning Forum to debate the need for wellbeing policy in education and its impact on children, families and adults.

Ben Page, from IPSOS Mori will present the national picture of ‘Happiness in the UK’ from recent surveys
Sue Palmer, author of ‘Toxic Childhood’, will speak on her three-year research into the influence of contemporary culture on children’s development – particularly their capacity to learn
Questions that the forum will address will include:

Should policy-making promote wellbeing or is it up to us to learn to be happy for ourselves?
Although legislation should have shortened working hours many work places still have a culture of working longer hours. Can policy change workplace culture and would the right to paid time for learning help to enhance wellbeing?
Do long working hours have an impact on family life, wellbeing and the happiness of our children?
How far are wellbeing, happiness and achievement linked?
Is the credit-crunch an opportunity for us to learn to be happy with less?
Is current policy around funding for adult education affecting opportunities for the kind of learning experiences that promote wellbeing?
How can we learn our way to happiness?
